Suffolk Biodiversity Information Service
The Suffolk Biodiversity Information Service (SBIS) is the county’s biological data centre, responsible for collecting, curating, and sharing ecological records to inform decisions that benefit Suffolk’s wildlife. Its database now holds over 6.5 million records, contributed by a network of recorders, specialist groups, and organisations across the county – including SNS members and county recorders.
SBIS makes that data available to local authorities, ecological consultants, land managers, researchers, and conservation agencies, where it plays a direct role in planning decisions and habitat protection. It also maintains the county’s species distribution maps and hosts back issues of Suffolk Natural History, Suffolk Birds, and White Admiral.
SBIS is based at The Hold in Ipswich and has close links with the SNS. Records submitted through the SNS county recorder network are deposited with SBIS as part of the county’s permanent biological archive.
