Suffolk Moth Group
The Suffolk Moth Group is an informal group of moth recorders with an interest in the moth fauna of Suffolk, and has been active for over thirty years. Its primary activity is recording moths across the county, and it runs a regular programme of moth nights and daytime meetings from May to October, visiting a varied range of sites each year. Some of these events target priority moth species in Suffolk to aid understanding of their distribution and ecology. Forthcoming Suffolk Moth Group events appear on the SNS Events page
There is also an annual indoor meeting early in the year where group members discuss the previous season’s findings.
The group also has a Facebook page – Recording Moths in Suffolk – which is open to interested people. News on the latest sightings, field meetings, and identification queries is among the subjects covered on the page. Alongside this, it maintains a website – suffolkmoths.co.uk covering distribution, life history, and identification for both macro and micro species and much more. Also on the site is an online recorder that allows easy entry of any moth sightings, which are then processed and loaded into the county moth database.
The Suffolk Moth Group holds joint field meetings with the SNS, and its recording feeds directly into the county database held by SBIS. Neil Sherman, the SNS County Moth Recorder, is closely involved with both organisations.
